A fan clutch is a thermostatic engine cooling fan that can freewheel at low temperatures when cooling is not needed, allowing the engine to warm up faster, relieving unnecessary load on the engine. As temperatures increase, the clutch engages so that the fan is driven by engine power and moves air to cool the engine.
When the engine is cool or even at normal operating temperature, the fan clutch partially disengages the engine's mechanically driven radiator cooling fan, generally located at the front of the water pump and driven by a belt and pulley connected to the engine's crankshaft. This saves power, since the engine does not have to fully drive the fan.

When the temperature of the air flowing through the radiator rises, the bimetallic temperature sensor is heated and deformed, and the axis of the bias valve plate rotates, opening the oil inlet of the driven panel.
The silicone oil stored between the driven plate and the front cover is transported to the working cavity between the driving plate and the driven plate, the clutch is engaged, and the fan turns to rise.
As the air temperature increases, the opening of the oil inlet hole increases, and the vertical fan becomes faster.
When the temperature of the air flowing through the radiator drops, the bimetallic temperature sensor returns to its original state, and the valve plate closes the oil inlet.
Under the action of centrifugal force, the silicone oil returns from the working cavity to the oil storage cavity through the oil return hole, the clutch is disengaged, and the fan steering becomes very low.

Fan clutch function

The purpose is to reduce noise and improve engine economy. For an engine-driven fan, a fan clutch is usually used to control its speed.

When the car is driving, due to changes in environmental conditions and operating conditions, the thermal condition of the engine is also changing.

Therefore, the cooling intensity of the engine must be adjusted at any time.

For example, in the hot summer, when the engine is working at low speed and heavy load, and the temperature of the coolant is high, the fan should rotate at high speed to increase the cooling air volume and enhance the heat dissipation capacity of the radiator.

In the cold winter, when the coolant temperature is low, or when the car is driving at high speed with a strong oncoming wind blowing over the radiator, it becomes meaningless for the fan to continue working.

It not only consumes engine power in vain, but also produces a lot of noise.

Tests have proved that the water-cooling system requires fans to work only 25% of the time, and the fans need to work for a shorter time in winter.

Therefore, it is very important to adjust the cooling intensity of the engine at any time according to the thermal condition of the engine.

Installing a silicone oil fan clutch between the fan pulley and the cooling fan is one of the methods to achieve this adjustment.
